Series #45 Favorite Television Shows of 2017

 Hey Gang!

2017, had me watching quite a few television programs. I got vintage shows on Hulu or Netflix that I had heard of and finally be able to watch them in their entirety. Binge-watching Television is literally one of my favorite things to do, so putting together list posts like this, is always a win-win. Here are my Fave shows of 2017.

- Riverdale S1: I've been talking about Riverdale since before it premiered! I love everything about this show! My favorite three things about the show is that it's a mystery and EVERYONE looks GUILTY!!! You guys know I can't resist a mystery. I am absolutely loving that Josie and The Pussycats is all Black Women! Even when it wasn't, it was still Women of Color.  I AM SO IN LOVE WITH BROODING JUGHEAD! His sarcasm and references are life! If you haven't seen it yet, the entire first season is on Netflix, and it's so worth it. If you want to know more, read my season one post.

riverdale.jpg

- The Bold Type S1: This show was such a breath of fair air. Following the writers that attempted to turn Cosmo into a more feminist Magazine, you see the trials, tribulations and the hardships that came with that adventure. My favorite Character was kat, but Sutton was a close Second. I love that show was just honest. Showed you how hard it was too move departments, showed how difficult it would be to try new things, and how Magazines gathered Data for their quizzes, and other advice columns.

- Midnight, Texas S1: Another show brought to us by the writers of True Blood, I was immediately interested. Texas was in the title, but I counted three black women in the promo poster, I was intrigued! You follow a "charlatan" Psychic, who travels in a van and is running from some very bad people. His dead grandmother's ghost is attached to the van, and tells him he'll be safe in Midnight. However, Hell has other plans, Witches, Vampires, Werewolves and more inhabit Midnight, it is a special place for the supernatural *ahem, Hellmouth* if you will.

- Pretty Little Liars Finale: I definitely won't go into detail here, because it will just get me all worked up again. If you are super interested in the whole feels, I wrote an entire post about the Finale. Yep, An entire post on one episode. I am just so sad that it's over, I'm glad that Riverdale stepped in to fill the mystery shoes, but I'm going to need showrunners, to get on making more. I need more Mystery television in my life!

pretty-little-liars-series-finale.jpg

- Young and Hungry S1-S3: I'm generally not a comedy kind of gal. What I find funny, and what most other people find funny generally doesn't correlate. However, Young and Hungry really took me by surprise. Sophia is definitely my favorite character, and I can't wait for the next season of Hi-jinks.

youngandhun.jpg

- Dear White People S1: When the film came out a couple of years ago, I could not wait to go see it in theaters. I was so sad that was all there was going to be, then earlier this year, I saw an ad for it on Netflix, and I was so flippin' excited. It was a lot more hands-on than I was expecting, but I absolutely loved every episode. I need to know what's going to happen with Gabe and Sam, Lionel and Silvio. I want to know what will change now that his son has been in that predicament. I want a whole 'nother season!!! If you haven't watched it, the whole season is on Netflix.

dearwhitepep.jpg

- Voltron: Legendary Defender S1: I wasn't a huge fan of Voltron when I was younger, but that is the awesome part of a reboot when it comes to cartoons. It helps introduce a new audience to something that they may not have experienced. If you haven't watched this series yet, please give it ago, All three seasons are on Netflix, and my favorite character is Pidge. Dressing like a boy to get into an elite school and help find her missing father and brother, she and four others, discover lions that when connected together create the Mighty Voltron. A force of Hope against the intergalactic battle of Good and Evil with the Galrans led by Lord Zarkon.

Voltron-Legendary-Defender-Still-5.jpg

- Dark Shadows S1: I remember watching re-runs of this on WGN when I was younger with my grandmother and my uncle. I came across it on Hulu a couple of months ago and not only do they have the entire original black and white series but the reboot and the revival series! The story revolves around Barnabas Collins who comes back to meet the more modern lineage of his family. Barnabas's character is alluded to be a Vampire, and there are other supernatural phenomena happening as well. Considered the longest lasting Gothic Drama on Television, It is something I've always been enjoying. I highly recommend.

DarkShadows1.jpg

- Drak Pack: I wasn't sure how I had missed this cartoon before, but I came across it, and I was addicted! It is the most cheesiest piece of animation I think I have ever seen and I am living for it. When I first found it I wasn't sure I was going to like it because the art wasn't great, but then I came across the theme song, and I KNEW after they said "O.G.R.E., The Organization of Rotten Enterprises", I know I was going to be hooked.

Wish He Was Real #2: Dick Grayson

Hi Gang!

Thought I would bring back an old favorite. About two years ago, I had come up with two different series detailing attributes that I loved about fictional characters. Fangirling survived and became a very popular series on Her story Arc, all about fictional female role models.

The second series, Wish He Was Real, kind of fell into the ether. Don't worry though, because I'm bringing it back with one of my favorite male fictional characters, the first one I did was about Dr. Spencer Reid, you can read that here. Without Further Ado, let's get started.

batman_tv_1960s_21-h_2017.jpg

Dick Grayson is not a new name to the blog, I've talked about him several times. His Nightwing series, He's got his own video, and he's mentioned several other times in various other posts that aren't all about him.  This time I thought it would be fun to give him his own full post and character write up and really let you guys know just why I'm so keen on him.

I guess we'll start at the beginning, I think the first time I saw Dick Grayson was as Robin in Batman: The Animated Series. My dad was always bringing home DC animated cartoons and films for us to look at, he was my gateway into the comics that have become such an important part of my life. Batman has stayed a part of my life and although there have been lots of Robins, there has only been one Dick. None of them ever lived up to Dick, and quite a few of them has fallen flat.

nightwing.gif

Dick Grayson, born to a family of amazing acrobats, becomes an orphan when a gangster kills his parents. Batman takes him under his wing, trains him, and helps him track down his parent killer. The ability to choose whether or not Dick kills the gangster is one of the rare defining moments of Batman's tutelage. Dick is bound and determined to rid the earth of this scum, but he begins to think about what would happen if he took a life, how differently Batman would be if he had killed his parent's killer, and he decides not to go through with it.

Dick Grayson really came into his own once he became Nightwing. Although my Friend Emily and I fight about it all the time, I still think that Barbara and he should be together, even though thanks to the animated DC films, He and Kor'i are growing on me. I think it's really just because I grew up with him. Granted he came out a long time before I was born and was technically an adult, and yes they moved onto other robins. But for Me, Dick will always be the Robin that I grew up with. He was the first, and he just has a super special place in my heart.

robin.gif

Originally, I only liked him as Robin. Once he became Nightwing, it really took me some time to come around to him being something different. I'm currently reading the Tim Seeley Series, and I am so in love. This is the Dick that I knew and loved! So I read his New 52 and I was intrigued although I did not go on to read Grayson, and then I picked it up again when DC Rebirth began Nightwing, and Seeley is definitely not disappointing me.

I think one of my favorite things about Dick is that he is the only Robin to become Batman. Yeah, let that sink in, in the battle with Bane, that literally broke Batman's back, Dick dressed as Batman until he recovered. This story arc is still extremely popular, and garnered great response, as it gave way to a more light-hearted Batman and a more brooding Robin, with Damian. I love that Dick is smart, not just bookwise but streets as well. His technological prowess and his ability to lead not only made him a great Batman but a great Titan as well.

One of my favorite renditions of the character would have to be the Batman Tv series. Burt Ward graced my walls as a girl, even though most girls my age, didn't know who he was. That sho is just something special. Adorable 60's Dick, in his sweaters, and collared shirts, exclaiming about how he didn't want to learn more French, or how he hated calculus, and his puns! Holy How Could You Not Love Him, Batman?

My Issue With Spiderman: Homecoming

Hi Gang!

I've got something I want to get off my chest about this film. I've been holding it in since I originally saw the movie in theaters, back in July. Now before I start, I have to say how excited I was about this movie. Spiderman, Peter Parker was finally coming to the MCU. He's such an integral part of the directions the movies are heading in now, that I was so excited when I saw Homecoming was going to be part of Marvel/Disney's Films.

DEurvL6W0AUgHpM.jpg

I was even more impressed when I saw how diverse the casting was. Two black female leads? In a comic book film? This was also before Black Panther's Trailer came out and before that I would have said it was absolutely unheard of. I was so excited not only about these bad ass ladies becoming part of the Marvel Universe but the representation that this movie held. Zendaya and Laura Harrier did such a good job in their roles, and I instantly fell in love with MJ's Devil May Care attitude.

Michelle_Jones_(Earth-199999)_from_Spider-Man_Homecoming_001.jpg

There were a few things that are generally parts of Spiderman films that were left out of Spiderman Homecoming that can be chalked up to creative license and writing. I can get with that, it definitely doesn't have to absolutely be the source material. Especially, if in its place the film will be more inclusive then it's foundation.

spidey2.png

One of the things you'll always find in a Spiderman film is the kiss. Now I'm not saying that Spiderman is supposed to ALWAYS be romantic. It's not. However, the kiss is something that is just always there, and now that Peter has a black love interest suddenly it just isn't mentioned? Isn't even thought out? Something you would always find if his love interest was white, that suddenly the writers, just forgot to put in?

xomak0odzbsd4ypmdkcr.jpg

With the racist casting of Dr. Strange, wouldn't this be an optimal opportunity to prove that you've learned your lesson and that you are listening to your VERY DIVERSE AND INCLUSIVE AUDIENCE and show that you are taking our criticsm to heart? That you are trying to fix things. A lot of people I've talked to about this, think it isn't a big deal, and that it was just oversight.

Spider_Man_Homecoming_Photos_One.png

The issue isn't the kiss. The issue isn't even the lack of a kiss. The issue is representation. I am a black bi woman who loves COMICS, and even though you can find comics on literally every subject, diversity is still something that people are just now putting thought into. When I was in college, I talked about comics all the time with my friends and anyone who would listen honestly, and even though we were comic buffs, they found it difficult to name 6 Black heroes from either of the Big Two exclusively.

mj.gif

The issue is that Peter Parker, a MAJOR character in the Marvel Pantheon has a Black love interest, and one of the things that has become a staple of his character, and the way he is presented in media, was left out once the race of his crush wasn't white. I'm hoping that it's because although he was attracted to Liz, that he will ultimately end up with MJ, and they're saving it for that. I'm trying to be optomistic, but it really pisses me off that a lot of people aren't seeing the bigger picture.

Cinema #31: Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Hi Gang!

We went to go see Kingsman 2 a couple of weeks ago, and so much happened that it has taken me a while to gather all of my thoughts on the subject but now I'm ready to write them up, so welcome back to Cinema!

Let me just say right off the bat that I absolutely loved the film. I consider it to be in the list of the few sequels that have surpassed the originals. When kingsman came out I was instantly interested, as a fan of Bond, and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. I figured another British spy would be something interesting to watch. I thought it was going to be your run of the mill spy film, but I was wrong.

galahad.gif

The Golden Circle follows along the same strain, a two and a half hour completely tongue in cheek film that continues to follow Eggsy, his girlfriend and his love of dogs. Eggsy is paid a visit by his old rival Charlie, except Charlie is packing brand new robotic prosthetics. Their battle leads to The Kingsman headquarters being blown up, and Eggsy and Merlin out on their own.

kingsman-2-the-golden-circle-full-trailer-video.gif

Through a unique (In Case of Emergency Pull this) They discover A bottle of Whiskey from Statesman is supposed to save them. Statesman, their American Sister company, has a unique way of entertaining their new visitors. I was personally a huge fan of Halle and Channing in this film.

With the help and resources of Statesman, we meet our evildoer, Poppy. Poppy is a Drug Cartel Leader, that desperately needs a new name. I don't want to ruin the film for you so I won't go into too much more detail.

kings.jpg

I really enjoyed this film. I loved its tongue in Cheek comedy, and it's almost manic way of treating my emotions, first I was happy, then Sad, then laughing, and then confused and then my confusion was lifted and I was happy again. I love a movie that will make me feel. You'll have lots of feels in this film, so just a heads up.

When I headed out to see the film, I thought that the trailer had given a lot of the film away, but literally, there's probably an entire two hours left, to see. So don't let that stop you, the film definitely still has some surprises up its sleeves. I haven't read Kingsman, but I'm hoping there's a third one. This is definitely a series I need to add to my film collection.

My Favorite Witches

 Happy October Gang!

I know I've been lacking on the Halloween content but don't worry, I'm back in action. I thought it would be fun to countdown my favorite fictional witches! I spend a good portion of my time reading fantasy and paranormal fiction, so I have quite a few.

Sucy: From Little Witch Academia, She is a Filipino witch, who is efficient with poisons. She's always gathering new plants and materials to create different potions. Her friends are almost always a guinea pig, but I don't think she actually means them any harm. Whenever they're in trouble, Suzy always has a poison up her sleeve. I also love that she always looks ghostly as well, you never see her out of her uniform robes, but I feel like she would have that goth girl aesthetic. She's super sarcastic too, which I adore in a female character.

sucy2.gif

Ursula: I know she's considered a sea witch, but let's not split hairs. Ursula is my favorite Disney Villain as well. When I was younger, The Little Mermaid was one of my favorite movies, but I could actually care less about Ariel. I was all about the music, and the mischief that Ursula could get up too. I was ecstatic when she made an appearance in the Kingdom Hearts Series and I am patiently waiting for her stand-alone film ala Maleficient.

ursula.jpg

Zatanna: Is there a difference between a witch and a sorcerer? Eh, I won't go into too much detail, I fangirl about Zatanna pretty often on here. She was my first convention cosplay, and I'm still recognized for it, so she'll always have a special spot in my heart. Her amazing magical abilities only hindered by her need to speak her spells backward she is one of the most powerful magical beings in the DC universe. She is criminally underused.

Zatanna.jpg

Kiki: From Kiki's Delivery Service. One of my favorite Ghibli films and probably the first representation of a witch I can clearly remember, Kiki will always be special to me. Wanting to make her own mark on the world, and not following in other's footsteps is something I've always admired about her. She moves to a new town where she doesn't know anyone and starts her own delivery business, and makes new friends. Her cat talks which is always a plus in my book.

Kiki__s_Delivery_Service_by_KikisDeliveryService.jpg

Sabrina Spellman: NOT THE TELEVISION VERSION. I'm strictly referring to the comic versions only. Original Archie's Sabrina and Archie Horror Sabrina have really grown on me. Thanks to the amazing new comic by Hack and Aguirre-Sacasa, I have just fallen in love with the dark and gothic themes of their story. I'm super interested in learning more about Sabrina's father, and what other villains will appear, and now that she's slated for her own television program, I can't wait for more.
