Octoween #4: PowerGirl

Hey Gang!

I was so excited when I actually was able to put Powergirl together! I will have some better pictures soon, but I thought this was cute so I decided to write about it! I know its not a bob, but I honestly think it looks cuter this way.

This Costume is just a bodysuit from Rue 21, a red cape from Amazon, and the Blond wig from Apple Jack.

5 DC Heroine's I want in Titans!

Hey Gang!

DC has been chugging along with their Titans Series. A full trailer was released a few months ago, and now there are more fleshed out ideas about the pilot, when it will be released, and even character posters. I thought it would be fun to talk about a few DC characters I’m hoping will make an appearance. While putting this together I started thinking about characters that are both older than the titans and also the same age, because everyone needs a mentor. While thinking about that I also started to put together a list of villains that I wanted to see, so keep an eye out for that list as well!

Zatanna: She’s my favorite DC character, of course she was going to make an appearance. I would finally love to see her get the love she deserves in perhaps an arc on the show. They made her a teenager in Young Justice and although they simply dangled her as a love object for Robin, I still think it was a step in the right direction. It showed how powerful she is, and how much more powerful she could be. Although Raven is a witch, Zatanna is a SORCEROR, she’s a lot more powerful than Raven, could help her control her powers more.

Cassandra Cain: Originally a forced assassin, she was actually under Batmans’ wing to become one of the best batgirls that never spoke a single word. She’s mute probably as a coping mechanism against the abuse that she suffered and saw. Cassandra is a master of hand to hand combat and weapons, and with the tutelage of both Barbara and Bruce she would be an absolute asset to any team, especially the titans.

Fire: As one of my favorite characters that really gets no love at all, I had to put her on the list. Literally the last time I think I saw her, was in Justice League Unlimited for three episodes. Her entire body is encased in emerald flame, and she can FLY! Why more people aren’t loving her is beyond me. Sure Starfire, can fly, and shoot green flame,(beams) but Fire is FLAME! So THERE! She’d still be a great asset. I personally would love to see her in more things.

Mera: Hear me out! Being half and half, she is able to breathe on land. She could be the perfect liason between Atlantis and the US. Just like Starfire and Tamaran! She’s powerful, political, and a force to be reckoned with. When I brought this up to the Boy Wonder he said Aquaman’s Wife? This is the notion I want to blow away. Sure she’s married to Aquaman but she’s so much more than that. SHE”S A GODDAMN QUEEN (Literally), She leads an army of Female soldiers against Oceanmaster. She’s had her own Solo run, which is more than can be said than a lot of other heros that are getting love right now. This edition would also round out the team more as you have two weapon masters, two fliers, a changeling, and now someone who can control water.

Vixen: She’s definitely gotten the rub in the past several runs. When I first met her in Justice League: Unlimited, she was awesome but caught in between John and Shayera, and that was it. We got a little bit of her powers and then she was gone, then she had her own mini animated series, and I was like YEAH! and then she had her own one shot and then that was it. I was pretty sad at how it played out. Sure they have a changeling, but Vixen is different from Beast Boy in one very pivotal way. Beastboy can change into the animal, whether he may have the weight of the animal, he may not always have the strength of the animal, where as Vixen’s ability gives her the essence of the animal, which is why I think she deserves a spot on the team. She deserves a chance to show everyone just how powerful she can be.

Honorable Mention: Big Barda: She’s just such a huge bad ass character that gets absolutely no love. She’s a God dude! What more do you need? Immortality, Master of hand to hand combat, that particular lean where she might take it a touch to far, but only for the good of the team, a Mega rod. I mean, she’s a fearless female warrior, and would be great to see in the television show. So why not?

Comics I’m looking forward too #5: October

Hey Gang!

Happy October! My favorite month is upon us and what better way to spend a Wednesday then to talk about comics that I’m looking forward too!

Blackbird Image A: Bartel W: Humphries 10/3: I met Jenn at C2E2 2017, and she was so sweet, adorable AND TALENTED! So when I found out that she was going to have a brand new series, I knew I just had to put it on the list. There’s magic, cute boys, and two worlds, I don’t think I needed anymore.

Exorsisters Image A:Lagace W: Boothby 10/17: Two very different but none the less adorable sisters have a business exorcising demons. I didn’t need anything else.

Lodger IDW A + W: Lapham 10/24: A Serial Killer is making his way through the midwest, a girl wants revenge. There’s a mystery to solve, so of course its on my list!

Miss Fury Dynamite W:Tucci A:Kubert 10/3: I’m so excited to see Miss Fury get a new series. If you didn’t know Miss Fury is a really old character, she predates Wonder Woman! She’s a really powerful character, and can hold her own with any other male hero!

Sex Death Revolution Black Mask A:Farrow W: Visaggio 10/31: A coven collapses. A sorceress no longer has protection, and sex in New York, Sounds like a good read to me.

Sparrowhawk Boom A: Basla W: Dawson 10/3: I’m actually reviewing this for Comicosity so keep a look out for that. It’s like a civil war but with Fairies, and the protagonist is brown. Sounds good to me.

Bettie Page Halloween Shot Dynamite A: Ruiz W: Avallone 10/24: I was pretty excited for both stand alones, Bettie Page and Vampirella, but Vampirella is being written By Sc*** Lob**** and I refuse to give that piece of shit my time or my cash.

Umbrella Academy:Hotel Oblivion W: Way A: Ba 10/03’: As a huge fan of My Chemical Romance, and what Way has done with DC’s Young Animal, I had to put this on the list. A continuation of the Umbrella Academy story told in a mini series.

September Comics I'm looking forward to

 Hey Gang!

It's a new month and with that a whole slew of new comics that I'm going to want to read. Here are a few of the ones I'm looking forward to adding to my pull list.

- Vampirella and Deja Thoris. Dynamite. 9/26 : The Matchup no one knew they needed. I've never actually read either series by themselves but they've been talked about for years, what better way to start then on a series where they team up? Dejah is risking war by checking out a ship that crashes on Mars, but it's even bigger stakes when it turns out to be Vampirella and she's in danger.

- Maneaters. Image. W:Cain A:Niemczyk. 9/26: Chelsea Cain is back in comics. That's all I needed to know about this series to make the list, because I was absolutely heartbroken when Mockingbird was canceled. In this series, Mutations are turning menstrating women into Wild and Ferocious Cats. Do you really need anything else? I can't wait to read this series!

- Cemetery Beach. Image. W: Ellis A: Howard. 9/12: This series is different from what I normally read but I'm ready for it. The series is about a murderess and a Pathfinder are trying to escape a torture cell on an island on foot, filled with generations of murders and crazy people.

- Dick Tracy. IDW. W:Allred A: Tommaso. 9/19: I'm a sucker for a mystery comic. I'm hoping since it's going to be updated that I won't have to worry about overt racism, and this series will only bring the best parts of Dick to the table.

- Moth and Whisper. Aftershock. w:Anderson A:Hickman. 9/12: Meet Nikki a genderqueer teen who is one of the best thieves in the game. Why shouldn't they be, they're only the offspring of the most notorious thieves in this cyberpunk futuristic land.

A Chat With: Brenna Thumler

 Hey gang!

With August right around the corner, so are some brand new comic concepts that I've never seen before but am dying to read. In my August Previews video one comic mentioned is Sheets, a graphic novel written and illustrated by Brenna Thumler and published by Lion Forge, I scored an interview and I can't wait for you guys to meet her.

NAL: Tell us a little about yourself.

BT: I received my degree in illustration, but not once during college did I think I’d work on graphic novels. In fact, I actively avoided them, assuming I wouldn’t be happy with or suitable for that type of work. But sometimes fate knows you better than you know yourself, and won’t take “no” for an answer. When I began illustrating my first - an adaptation of Anne of Green Gables - it was like finding true love, a dream home, and the secret recipe for that restaurant sauce no one can replicate. Storytelling has always played a significant role in my life and my art, so clearly I was stubborn and blind. Now I can’t imagine myself doing anything else.

NAL: Walk us through your typical day.

BT: When I’m in the middle of a graphic novel, my day starts the same as any other: with coffee, breakfast, and Sudoku puzzles. Then I dive into my work, which might mean writing, storyboarding, drawing, or coloring, depending on where I am in the process. And here I stay, hunched over my desk, with Spotify or my umpteenth run of The Office playing in the background, until I decide I should probably sleep. I do take breaks to cook meals, attend nightly Zumba classes, and play music, which are my three favorite ways to unwind! I love my job, but it’s demanding. Being an artist means being an artist at all times. It’s a powerful thing, though, to be willing to make whatever sacrifices necessary and be so indescribably passionate about something so intimidating and challenging.

NAL: Who are some of your favorite writers or artists?

BT: Where do I begin!? Some of my favorite writers are Jodi Picoult, John Green, Daniel Handler, and Emma Donoghue. As for artists and creators, this is even harder to narrow down. I’ll say Jillian Tamaki, Vera Brosgol, Jon Juarez, Quentin Blake, and Michael Byers, but stress that there are about fifty other favorites.

NAL: What was your favorite thing about Sheets?

BT: My favorite part of working on Sheets was the freedom to create a world that was entirely my own, with characters that I have become so personally attached to. (They’re my friends!) I put a lot of myself into the book, but discovered, even more, growing as both a person and artist. When I complete a graphic novel project, I am shocked by how much I’ve learned and how much my skills have improved. I love knowing that there’s no end to the creative process; there’s always another level for you to strive to work towards.

NAL: What would you consider your most favorite project?

BT: Sheets has been the most incredible project I’ve ever worked on. Because it is my first original graphic novel, it will always hold a special significance. It was a great challenge that transformed both my abilities and my perspective, and I have never felt such a strong sense of purpose. Plus, it has ghosts.

NAL: If you could collaborate with anyone who would it be and why?

BT: I would love to do a graphic novel with Lemony Snicket, whether it be an adaptation of his Series of Unfortunate Events, or a new work. To illustrate his dark sense of humor and quirky scenarios would be a thrilling experience. And a visual adaptation of Violet, Klaus, and Sunny’s story would involve one bizarre, action-packed adventure after another, each in a unique and dynamic setting. Also, if the Duffer Brothers ever want a graphic novel version of Stranger Things, I’m so on board.

NAL: If you could live in any fandom world where would you choose and why?

BT: Is Hogwarts too obvious? My other choices would be Wes Anderson films, because my surroundings would always be color-coordinated and symmetrical, or Stars Hollow, because the worst thing that would ever happen would be Taylor Doose installing a traffic light.

NAL: Do you have any tattoos?

BT: I don’t, but admittedly, the thought of a small ghost tattoo has crossed my mind ever since I started Sheets.

NAL: Any advice for aspiring artists?

BT: Make connections and don’t stop drawing. It’s easy to get stuck in your own little art corner, but meeting others in the industry is critical. If an opportunity to network presents itself, jump on it! And if you assume you’ve reached your maximum artistic potential, don’t. I just finished my second book and I still don’t believe my art is good enough, yet. Keep drawing every day, because there is always room to get better, and share these drawings with the world.

I'm so excited to read Sheets! Make sure to visit Brenna on all her social media.

August Comics I’m looking forward too!

 Hey Gang!

Don’t drag me, I know that there have already been two weeks of comics released. I started a new job and time has just really gotten away from me. Here are some of the comics I’m looking forward too in the month of August.

- Crowded: Image Comics: W:Sebella A:Stein 8/15: In the time of crowdsourcing for something people really want. Now there’s an app to crowdfund for an assassin. In true millennial fashion, you have an app to counteract that and hire your very own bodyguard. Now our main character is being hunted down, and they have 30 days to figure out who wants to kill them before time and their lives are up. I’m really looking forward to this one.

- Leviathan: Image Comics W:Layman A: Pitarra 8/1: It seems like the month of fantasy! The main characters having a party, runs out of ice, comes back and is met with a ginormous smiling Dragon. His friends decided to pull out some magic tarot cards, and now there are demons and such running amok. Sounds like a fun time to me.

- Modern Fantasy: Dark Horse Comics W: Roberts A:Gudsnuk 8/29: In this series, you follow two girls who are trying to keep their crappy office jobs afloat and complete magical side quests. They battle dragons, collect gold and generally save the world, while trying to figure out how they’re going to pay their student loans. I wonder how many pieces of gold you’d need to pay off a student loan...

- Sheets: Lion Forge A + W: Thummler 8/15: I’m pretty excited to read this graphic novel. There’s a washing machine, and a ghost, and the fall, and I’m just so ready for an adorable ghost story. Even better, on the day this comes out, Nerdette At Large has an interview with Brenna Thrummler! I can’t wait to introduce you to her gang, She’s amazing and I know her story will be great!
